Introducing Fergus!

fergus2Well, prepare yourselves! We have a new addition to the family. You are about to see something like 20 photos of this little guy, followed by (no doubt) entire months of way more kitten posts than any one could care about (besides his mom).

His name is Fergus. He was named that by his foster mom, Laurie (and co-mom Kim), who have been taking care of him and his siblings from just a few days old on behalf of the Animal Shelter in Tacoma, WA. If you'd like to read about his history, you can do so at Laurie's blog Itty Bitty Kitty Committee.

They did a wonderful job. I have never had a human-raised kitten before (as opposed to one just left in a tiny cage at the shelter) and so far it really has made a difference! Fergus is totally chill, totally adaptable, and walked right in and was like "oh yeah, this is cool, I live here now, you're my mom? ok, cool".

We started by just letting him out in the bedroom so he would have time to adjust (and Mushroom would too). We planned on him being in there for a few days but that plan was quickly abandoned because Fergus didn't really need to be sheltered too much.

fergusA nice day, spent with J, lovely afternoon, a dinner party with delicious goulash, wine, salad followed by a vampire movie...no one wanted to pose for pictures though so you get Fergus. I guess now that he's 1 he's officially a cat, not a kitten any more. His birthday was observed on January 15th.

Two years ago today, I knew we were going to move to Seattle.

p.s. Fergus woulda looked pretty good in the 70's, no?

Fergalicious

D300_DSC_0761_web640

Yeah, that is, unfortunately, one of Fergus' many nicknames. Fergalicious! Because he SO is, ya know?

Interesting story behind this post. This was a Friday, and our friends the Dragon-Fires were passing through town to go off and celebrate their 11th wedding anniversary like two newlyweds. We were all chatting in the living room, but I always have a camera nearby, and when Fergus decided to sit in such a great sunspot I had to photograph him. While I was doing this, my friend Mrs. Dragon-Fire was photographing me photographing Fergus. She has a hilarious account of our weekend on her own blog Parenthetical Statement. It's worth the read because on Grumblehog, you are 1) used to getting only MY take on the events in our lives and 2) you never get to see unflattering portraits of my ass.

Fergus

D300_A_DSC_0041_web640 Just a random photo of Fergus continuing to be the snuggliest cat in the world (and be in love with J).

Still sick although my fever is much less today. I have trolled the internet all day and exhausted the tv and web for entertainment.

fergusTest shot for ebay photos. No, I am not ebaying Fergus...but he jumped into the studio and got his picture taken amongst the crystal bowls, old purses, etc. that I am ebaying as part of my big purge. Inspired by my sister's home with it's clean flat surfaces and zero clutter...I have become a massive (probably year long) purge of all the crap in our home we don't use or need. There's tons of it! Why!?! I am reading a bunch of great books on clutter and changing your life by getting rid of it so I am sure I will be sharing some of those tid bits with you here. In the meantime, if anyone needs a fur stole...

Tail Hunting

D300_DSC_0548_web640Fergus, intently stalking his own tail. He's on the hunt! Unfortunately, he prefers to hunt Mush's tail which Mush is not too crazy about. Fergus also doesn't seem to have any internal alarms that tell him when Mush might be reaching his threshold.

fergus Further confirmation that Fergus wouldn't want to do what a cat is supposed to do to a bird once they catch it. He enthusiastically hunts the real ones from behind our front window but this "bird" flew too close and paid a terrible price...

4.14.2009

tired J, literally less than 5 minutes after walking in the door after work, asleep on the couch with a sleepy Fergus on his lap. Fergus has recently fallen in love with him, and yes, I am a little jealous.

The Itty Bitty Kitty Committee

IBKC Many of you know that we got our dear sweet lovable Fergus from a great foster home called The Itty Bitty Kitty Committee. Foster mom Laurie provides a loving home to hundreds of kittens each year, creates the most well socialized cats I've ever seen in my life, and is now going above and beyond in an attempt to raise $15,000 to help all the cats that go through the Tacoma shelter system. She has asked everyone to donate and to spread the word to others so that's just what I am doing here with her lovely image above!

Some info from her page:
$20 will feed a shelter cat for a week
$35 will vaccinate ten kittens
$50 will provide a life-saving dental cleaning for an elderly cat
$100 will spay a female cat or neuter two male cats

If you can spare even $10 or $15 for a donation on behalf of Fergus, I would really appreciate it!

Fergus moves to the Living Room

D300_DSC_0414_web640Fergus is totally chill and he trots around very confidently like he knows where he is and where he's going. It's very impressive! No hiding or freaking out or timidly checking things out - just trot into the room and start being a kitten. Under the couch! Into the kitchen! What's in here? What's up there? Good kitty!

3.13.2009

orchidStill have the studio set up so I thought I'd take advantage of it and very carefully photograph my orchid. This is the third time this year this orchid has bloomed, which makes me very happy. The first time, Fergus broke the stem and I wasn't able to force it to bloom. The second time, Fergus broke the stem but it later bloomed in a vase of water. The third time, *fingers crossed*.

Nerves

D300_DSC_7653_web640
Totally forgot to shoot yesterday! Oh well, sometimes that happens. We went to see the new Harry Potter movie and I explained to J and M that my fear of the milfoil is similar to the scene where dead seaweed creatures come alive and drag Harry to the bottom of a lake of death.

My nerves have been going off the charts as the race approaches.

M came up with a potentially brilliant stroke - she figured out a way to "re-brand" my fear of the milfoil (seaweed) as having a Fergus-like personality and voice (there are always voices to go along). Now the milfoil says, "I'm milfoil, I'm gonna get you and snuggle you and love you." in Fergus' voice. You probably have to be here to see it and understand but I do a pretty darn cute impression of milfoil.

Tonight is the night before the big race...I asked J to make me a bread so I know I'd have some good stuff in my tummy tonight and some slices waiting for me when I get up at 4:45 AM tomorrow. Here he is scoring the dough before it goes into the oven. He made a beautiful bread.

Fergus

D300_DSC_0033_web400-3I am just going to sign off with this little one of Fergus. Hope you enjoy it.

Things I've done recently:
- taken a hot bath with a bowl of strawberries
- slept late
- stayed up late reading
- picked up an old chair off a street corner for free
- bathed an unhappy kitten
- watched old movies: Sahara with Humphrey Bogart and The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

fergusFergus went to the big-time eye doctor today and the doc things all will be fine for our little herpes-face.

Fergus

D300_DSC_0485_web400D300_DSC_0558_web640You guys have been waiting patiently for over a week for more updates on Fergus! It has been really busy around here - I am working 10-12 hour days and with J in NY all the kitten babysitting duties have been on me.

4.19.2008

Fergus

D300_DSC_0048_web640Fergus loves the orange sofa, and the little sunny spot that falls on it in the late afternoon. He is getting mush bigger and FAST! His eyes are definitely an olive color, not yellow-green like Mush's.

Sleepytime

fergus3So, finally Fergus conquered the office as well and was quick to find Mushroom's catbed on my desk. He was in love with it immediately. I am not sure how much Mush will be in love with that fact. Mush is currently crashed out sleeping on our bed though. I think he's tired from being so extra-vigilent these last 24 hours! What I love about Fergus in Mush's cat bed is just HOW MUCH ROOM there is for him in there!

Mush, as you may remember, fills it and SPILLS out of it.

Found!

D300_DSC_8167_master_web640 J woke me this morning to tell me that our front door had blown open in the night and Fergus had escaped and was missing! Our cats are strictly indoor cats and Fergus especially (bless his stupid heart) has no "street skills" so I was very worried. We spent about an hour searching the neighborhood and calling his name before J had to go to work. I made up some fliers for the poles in our immediate neighborhood. As the hours ticked by, I was convinced I'd never see him again. Michelle suggested that instead of walking around calling for him, I just sit quietly on the front porch and wait. She said it sounded weird but had worked for them when their cat went missing. I tried it, sitting with some ginger ale and my book, and after an hour and a half he came running up the alley happy to be home! He's dirty and scared and will most likely need to sleep off his little adventure.

Fergus

D300_DSC_2898_web640

I skipped a few days in the photo-a-day project, a luxury (or weakness) I allow myself now that I've gone over the 500 mark. Maybe I should take that back? Oh well. It is what it is. Those two days are lost forever doing whatever it was I was doing. On this day though, Fergus took a bath on the couch.

Flowerpot

Our next door neighbor's cat is named Flowerpot. He is a Maine Coon and our Fergus is in love with him. Flowerpot patrols our house and yard multiple times a day and Fergus can't help but moon over him through the window.
