The Last Post in May

D300_DSC_2903_web640

Tonight, we went out. We saw the new Indiana Jones movie (because we were required by law to do so), spent about 20 minutes discussing in detail how horrible it was while we walked from Belltown to Queen Anne on a chilly night, and drove over to Peter N's girl's place to play darts. I love to see different people's apartments, I find it fascinating. I should make a hobby of pretending to be searching for a new place and just go see places for the fun of it. We stayed there late playing a long 8 person game of cricket, which I won due to my technique of complete haphazardness combined with the ability to hit only bull's-eyes on demand.

Fergus II

D300_DSC_2895_web640

Fergus, like most cats, is adept at finding sunbeams and sleeping in them. In this case, he was eeking out the last moment of sunbeam...a few square inches carved out before the sun dips below the roof of the house next door.

I skipped a few days in the photo-a-day project, a luxury (or weakness) I allow myself now that I've gone over the 500 mark. Maybe I should take that back? Oh well. It is what it is. Those two days are lost forever doing whatever it was I was doing. On this day though, Fergus took a bath on the couch.

Keywords

Did you know that I can see you?? :)

My Google Analytics tells me all kinds of interesting things about the people who are reading my blog.

For instance, people have read my blog in 33 states in the U.S. Where are you people in Vermont, West Virginia, Delaware, Indiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, North and South Dakota, Wyoming, Idaho, Nevada, and Alaska??? If you are, or know someone who is, in these states - send them my blog! I'd like all 50! A big shout out to my top 5 viewing states: PA, WA, NY, VA, and OR. And yes, I can go right down to the town you are logging in from so I know when you read the blog! :P Besides the US, I am big in Europe, have been read in Iran, and Burundi (Thanks D!), and all the continents but Antarctica and Australia (but, yo, NZ, you rock!).

Today though, something in the data caught my eye. Below is the list of keywords that have led people from all over the internet to my site. Some make sense, some are confusing, some are down-right bewildering! I found myself wondering about the people that wrote them, and wondering what they thought when they wound up on my regular old little journal!!?

My number one biggest seller in one of six forms is "Cow Surgery"!!! Who knew?! Bri, you've made me famous! I didn't know so many people out there wanted to know about cow surgery. I like the variant "how to iv a cow"...not something I'd want to do by learning about it on the internet. And, I hope that person found better resources than this blog.

I personally like "toad with sticky feet", and although I didn't remember writing it, it leads you to this post.

I like that Yul Brynner made an appearance.

But, the one that bewilders me, truly, is the search for "hot slutty animal pictures". Wow. Now, I know I have a post that this must lead to but I cannot IMAGINE the disappointment of the person that clicked on this blog during that search. It must have been so unbelievably boring. The thing that worries me is that when you do a safe search for "hot slutty animal pictures" (and thanks to Internet Weirdo, I now have, *shudder*) this blog isn't on the first THIRTY pages of the results. I didn't have the stomach for more pages...so I have no idea how deep into the slutty animals search this visitor get before coming to Grumblehog!?! I hate to think of the new readers I may get now that I have TWO posts with the words "slutty animals" in them. Skeezy.

Go Back in Time

Hey! I am in the process of adding some REALLY old posts to the "Go Back in Time" section. It's what I am in the mood to do so deal with it!

Ok, *phew*, I just made 63 posts covering our lives up through the year 2004!!! Yeah!!! So, if you're at all interested in what we were doing way back then, click on the "Go back in time" button to start at the beginning.

I know you want posts on what we're doing RIGHT NOW but what I am doing right now is writing posts about 2004. So there!

Going Home

D300_DSC_0384_web640

Headed home, on the ferry, in our hoodies to keep warm, J and I huddle together for a quick self-portrait.

Camping IV

D300_DSC_0379_web640

Finally, it's time to pack up and leave. There are more humorous takes on this done by other bloggers, in fact, you may be interested in reading their takes on the entire weekend: J starts his camping blog here, and Mrs. Dragonfire writes about the whole weekend in one long post here.

Tiniest Sand Dollars

D300_DSC_0370-Edit_web640

Remember the hundreds of sand dollars I mentioned? On our last walk on the beach, we started finding smaller and smaller dead ones until we made it into a little contest to see who could find the smallest sand dollar. Mrs. Dragonfire won, so I photographed her collection in her hand. I have done this myself many times, as you know, but there is something really special about photographing other peoples' hands, especially of your loved ones. You never really get to sit and stare at someone's hands but when it's frozen in a photograph you get that chance.

Artsy Camping Shot

diptychI couldn't decide which I liked better, black and white or color, so I put them both together. Any opinions?

Games

D300_DSC_0374_web640We all also turn to some pretty cutthroat games. Yes, we take it very seriously. I, miraculously, schooled everyone in Cribbage this year, including the Cyclones and Mr. Dragonfire!

D300_DSC_0372_web640

Camping Activities

D300_DSC_0367_web640
To kill some of the long hours of camping, our group resorts to all kind of activities. Besides triathlon training (the Dragonfires), we do manicures (Mrs. Cyclone), sleep by the fire (J), and discuss politics and Shakespeare (Mr. Cyclone).

Wetsuits

composite
So, while the Dragonfires got into their wetsuits...wow, what a hilarious thing to do! It's not easy and it's not graceful, getting into a wetsuit. Mrs. Dragonfire (as you can see) was not pleased to have her photo taken and flashed a few threatening gestures my way.

Day Two

D300_DSC_0336_web640
Day Two at camping was a bit of a departure from the norm since Mrs. Dragonfire is training for a half-ironman (she's so hardcore!) and needed to find a lake to swim in since the water at Penrose Point seemed to be in a perpetually shallow low-tide. I had seen a lake on our way to the campground (but didn't log it's exact location since I didn't know I would need it) so we went on a roadtrip to find it. We were pretty well lost, but thankfully I had to puke from car-sickness so while I was out I asked a local for directions. He said "That's a real nice lake for swimming, honey." (Honey in a nice way, not in a condescending way). So, off we went and we found just about the most damn near perfect swimming lake you could find. If I had a wetsuit, even I would have swum in that lake.

The Gang

D300_DSC_0306_webjpgMotley Crew. So, this is the gang of campers. From left to right, Wally, Mr. and Mrs. Dragonfire, J, Smokey Joe, Mr. and Mrs. Cyclone.

Joe Alligator

D300_DSC_0342_web640Later that night, J and I saw this log and thought it looked like an alligator (head, one big eye, open alligator mouth). At first, it wasn't really on fire, there was just smoke pouring out of his mouth and his eyeball. J and I began to tell the cautionary tale of Mr. Joe Alligator who started smoking at a young age and eventually it caught his mouth on fire and he died a horrible death from smoking.

Dinner II

D300_DSC_0357_web640 Second dinner was packet night (pick a meat, pick some veggies, put into a foil packet, put on fire). Third dinner was steaks and baked potatos cooked on the fire. Oh my god, so delicious that I forget to photograph it.

Camping III

After that, it was an afternoon of chilling by the fire. Here's some photos of the ladies of camping chilling:

The Dragon-Fires

D300_DSC_0324_web640I did snap this photo of the Dragonfires looking (at the moment) like one of the coolest married couples I know.

D300_DSC_0339_web640
When they swam out across the lake, eventually all I could see of them was their orange and yellow heads. In this photo it looks like T is winning on the way back, but don't let that fool you, M had to stop to let him go ahead 1) so he wouldn't run over her with his crazy zig-zag swimming and 2) to keep an eye on him to make sure he didn't drown in his crazy zig-zag swimming. M is so hardcore!

Softcore T

D300_DSC_0322_web640But I would prefer to post this picture of T looking like some kind of wetsuited synchronized swimmer...

Hardcore T

D300_DSC_0321_web640I am sure T would prefer I post this picture of him all "rocking out" on swimming and looking like a badass triathlete.

The Boys

D300_DSC_0307_web640D300_DSC_0330_web640
With the Dragonfires out in the lake, and J off sleeping in a meadow, I was left to babysit the dogs who were extremely disconcerted that their parents had gone swimming out into the lake.

5.23.2008

S'mores!

D300_DSC_0293_web640Oh yeah, time for s'mores! This group makes some ostentatious s'mores but I am a s'more purist: graham crackers, hershey bars, marshmallow. If it ain't broke, don't go making it more expensive and decadent.

Sand Dollars

D300_DSC_0274_web640We went on a walk down to the beach and we found the water at very low tide. There were hundreds of live sand dollars on the beach! Each of those little black disks is a sand dollar. Later, on another walk to the beach, the live ones were either gone (do they swim? I dunno) or covered by the water but there were hundreds of the dead-collectible-skeletons of sand dollars everywhere.

Hobo-Style

D300_DSC_0288_web640The first night, we made burgers to keep things simple, and J made baked beans in the can.

Mrs. D-F

D300_DSC_0286_web640Yay, Mrs. Dragon-Fire. That's all I am going to say in this post.

Smokey Joe

D300_DSC_0283_web640Smokey Joe is a dog well suited to camping. This is him last year. Oh, this year I wasn't really in the spirit of taking camping photos so I just took some token snapshots, not like last year when I really made an effort. In fact, I brought my old D70 and left the D300 at home...the D70 is now a camping camera.

Camping II

D300_DSC_0282_web640J getting into the spirit of camping...

Campfire

D300_DSC_0281_web640First fire of the year! Yay! The campfire is my favorite part of camping.

Camping!

D300_DSC_0284_web640

This year, we went to a beautiful campground called Penrose Point, down on the Key Penninsula. It was in a beautiful forest with tall impossibly green trees that filtered the light beautifully and kept off the rain pretty well too.

D300_DSC_0280_web640J and I were the first to arrive and we pitched our tent. We decided to make some lunch while we waited but we realized we didn't have any utensils since the Dragon-Fires always bring them. J made me a knife out of alluminum foil (MacGyver style) and I made a PBJ.

Gray (Camping)

D300_DSC_0268_web640Headed off camping for the weekend. The weather looked gray and dreary as we rode the ferry across the sound but it turned out to be pretty nice for most of the weekend.

Columbia River

D300_DSC_2885_web640A brief stop again at the Columbia River. It's a good place to stretch your legs for a bit and enjoy the view. It's the only thing in the middle of a very long drive. The wind was so bad (or good? they run windfarms out here) that it scared me half to death to drive over that bridge.

I was last here a bit more than a year ago. I looked and looked and looked for this view again but I never found it.

Eastern Washington

D300_DSC_2875_web640In Eastern Washington, I saw this one little cloud that looked like it was being highlighted. I photographed it from the moving car.

Bull Durham

D300_DSC_2850_web640It was freezing cold though so I didn't stay long.

Wallace

D300_DSC_2856-Edit_web640Determined to have some photos from today, I stopped in Wallace, ID, a place I've never been before, a silver-mining-town. You can read more about Wallace here.

Idaho

D300_DSC_2845_web640I knew I would be in the car all day today, driving home from Montana. It's about a 7.5 hour trip without stops. The worst part of the trip is Idaho (sorry Idaho, but it's true).

5.20.2008

Alleys

D300_DSC_2828_web640We rounded out the afternoon with a drive through some of Missoula's alleyways. I fell in love with the alleys when I moved there because I had never seen anything like them. I had only seen dark, scary alleys that no one would venture into. These alleys are like secret pathways that lead to yards and gardens and workshops and nook and crannies with worn wood, chipped paint, and broken but beautiful things.

Gallery

D300_DSC_2820_web640We went by the school's gallery to see the current show, Oklahoma: Blood and Sky by Josh Meier. You can see the exhibit online here. Josh was one of the darkroom teachers while I was in school and he is one of the most talented photographers I've ever seen. It was a lovely surprise to see his show in the gallery. If I had some money, one of these prints would be on my wall right now! Someday, I would love to have a show of my own in this gallery.

Later

D300_DSC_2795-Edit_web640We drove by my old house where I stayed while in school. The outside hadn't changed a bit - I wish I could have seen the inside.

Shooting

D300_DSC_2809_web640C shooting.

Lomo'd Beetle

D300_DSC_2800_lomoA new look at an old car.

Revisit

D300_DSC_2796_acid_texture copyWe didn't stray too far out of town so instead, we revisited some of my old photographic haunts. I shot this old car (above, May 2008) during the first few weeks of being in school - on slide film.

Going back to the same place over and over again can be a wonderful experience - it reminds me that no photograph, never ever, can be exactly the same again. It happened once and only once and will never be the same.

This is the shot from two years ago (below, June 2006). I stood in this same spot to see if I could see it again but it was gone.

Shiny

D300_DSC_2643_web640At dinner, C's beautiful ring caught my eye.

Bicycles

D300_DSC_2654_web640Missoula has turned into even more of a bicycle town than I remember it being. There were cute looking vintagey bicycles everywhere. I wanted to steal about every other one we saw on the street.
